Trump: EU must buy oil and gas from the US |
Washington, 20.12.2024 |
 |
Newly elected US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the European Union (EU) must reduce its trade deficit with the United States by buying oil and gas, otherwise it will face tariffs. TASR reports this based on a CNBC report.
"I told the European Union that it must balance its huge deficit with the USD by buying our oil and gas in large quantities. Otherwise, it will only face tariffs," Trump wrote on his social platform Truth.
The US deficit in trade in goods and services with the EU in 2022 amounted to 131.3 billion USD (126.31 billion euros).
Threats to impose large tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada were an important part of Trump's presidential campaign. Now he is continuing them despite economists warning that the tariffs could cause inflation to accelerate in the US.
Analysts say there is great uncertainty about the extent of tariffs Trump will be willing or able to impose and the extent to which his rhetoric is a deal-making tool.Enrico Letta, a former Italian prime minister and dean of the IE School of Politics Economics and Global Affairs, told CNBC on Friday that the EU must be prepared for retaliation. “I think this is a transactional approach and we have to respond to this transactional approach. Trump is mixing energy and tariffs on goods, manufacturing and so on. I don’t think it’s right because these are two completely different areas,” Letta said. He added that if “Trump proposes such an asymmetric agreement on areas that are not interconnected, I think we have to do the same.”
The US is the biggest market for EU goods, accounting for 19.7% of EU exports in 2023.odkaz na stránku
