EU revenues helped us improve the budget deficit |

The deficit was slightly better in the first two months of this year, helped by revenues from the European Union (EU). This was announced on Tuesday by ČSOB Chief Economist Marek Gábri, who calculated that revenues from the EU were about 190 million euros higher at the end of February than a year ago.
"The percentage of budget revenue fulfillment was 12.2% in 2024 and 13.8% in 2025. This was helped by the current higher revenues from the EU budget for the first two months compared to 2024, as well as the plan. The planned fulfillment of tax revenues compared to the actual 2024, or rather the plan for 2025, is very similar, namely 14.9% versus 15.2%. However, revenues from the EU are about 190 million higher as of the end of February 2025 than a year ago and the fulfillment is about 9 percentage points higher," Gábri calculated.
According to the economist, state budget expenditures are almost at the same level in fulfilling the plan as a year ago. He explained that the state debt servicing expenses were planned for 2025 to be about 500 million euros higher than a year ago, at 1.646 billion euros, with about 515 million euros already paid in the first two months. According to Gábri, this was only about 50 million euros more than a year ago, which, given the overall higher budgeted debt expenses, results in a lower current performance in two months at 31.3%.
"Debt servicing expenses will be paid according to the repayment schedule, which may be different from a year ago. However, this is a type of expense that will very likely be 100% spent by the end of the year. The state will definitely pay its debt obligations when the obligation falls due," Gábri concluded.
