36 Slovak consuls from all over the world arrived in Slovakia and, together with another 130 colleagues connected online, completed a professional training course in Piešťany from April 14 to 16 focused on legislative changes and more efficient services to citizens. TASR was informed about this by the Communications Department of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MZVEZ) of the Slovak Republic.
The topic of the training was processing passports and visas with an emphasis on the implementation of current legislative changes related mainly to the need to recruit workers from third countries. “In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is strengthening its diplomatic missions with so-called flying consuls, who speed up the visa process in the part for which the ministry is responsible,” the ministry summarized.
Representatives of the Border and Alien Police Office of the Presidium of the Police Force and the Public Administration Section of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic also participated in the training as lecturers. They also spoke about the latest projects focused on the digitalization of the performance of consular functions.
“It is not just about visa issues, but also about services for Slovak citizens abroad, such as processing new documents, certifying documents, signatures or translations, and above all, assistance in acute situations, when our consuls are available 24 hours a day,” said Igor Pokojný, Director General of the Consular and International Law Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) emphasized that consular services are one of the most important pillars of the Slovak foreign service. “Our consuls are available directly in the countries where we have our offices open, whether they are embassies, general or honorary consulates, thanks to which we can help more effectively and in a more targeted manner. However, with the new challenges that are coming, it is necessary to move forward so that we can provide this service even better,” he explained.
In addition to Slovak offices abroad, Slovak citizens can also contact the newly established International Operational Crisis Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Slovak Republic, which provides consular-crisis information and serves as a first point of contact primarily for assistance abroad in cases of emergency. Employees of the Ministry of Diplomacy can also be contacted by telephone.
