Slovakia is above the EU average in the number of young farmers
Bratislava, 29.11.2025
Slovakia currently has 20% of farmers under the age of 40, which is quite high above the European Union (EU) average. Supporting young farmers and intergenerational exchange on farms is very important for maintaining food production. This was stated by EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen at a press conference on Friday after a meeting with representatives of the agricultural sector. “The EU average is less than 12%, so Slovakia is already in a better position compared to other countries in this regard,” said Hansen. The European Commissioner explained that in the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2027, six percent of funds should be allocated to support young farmers. However, according to Hansen, young farmers also need other forms of assistance. One of them is facilitating access to finance for investments. "I am saying that we will increase support for young farmers from the CAP. Yes, financial support is important, but we also need to look at how to facilitate access to finance for young people," he stressed. He added that he is in talks with the European Investment Bank about the possibilities of guarantees for young farmers, which would allow them to obtain advantageous conditions when obtaining loans. According to the European Commissioner, the attractiveness of working in agriculture could be increased, for example, by a relief service for young farmers. This would allow them to set aside free time for relaxation. According to Hansen, this idea still needs to be thought out and how to implement it. The European Commissioner dismissed concerns that the new agricultural policy would reduce subsidies for large farms. He recalled that Slovakia has a very diverse structure in terms of farm size. "The goal is not to play one against the other, because we need everyone," he stressed. He pointed out that area payments are not the only money coming to farms. Farmers can receive additional funding, for example, from various environmental measures, so according to him, even farms with an area of 5,000 hectares can receive support for the entire area. At the same time, production support should increase in the new CAP period after 2027.odkaz na stránku
