| Non-agricultural products will have EU designation of origin protection |
| Bratislava, 04.12.2025 |
 |
| Non-agricultural products, such as craft or industrial products, will be able to obtain protection of designations of origin of products and their geographical indications at the European Union (EU) level. Until now, they had this protection only at the national level. This follows from the new Act on Designations of Origin of Products and Geographical Indications of Products, which the members of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic finally approved. The change is related to the implementation of EU regulations.
“Since the area of designations of origin and geographical indications falls within the exclusive competence of the EU and is comprehensively regulated through EU legal instruments, the aim of the submitted draft legislation in the area of designations of origin and geographical indications is the implementation of the relevant EU regulations,” the submission report states.
For agricultural products, foodstuffs, wine and spirits, protection of designations of origin of products and their geographical indications is ensured at the European level, but for non-agricultural products it has not existed so far. A new system of protection of geographical indications should therefore be introduced for this category, and protection for them will only be possible at the EU level.
At the national level, 12 geographical indications for so-called non-agricultural products are currently protected in Slovakia. These are Modranská majolica, Soľnobanská lace, Levička golden onyx, Slovak opal, Detvianská embroidery, Sekulská ceramics, Kyjatice toys, Trstenská ceramics, Kostoliany nad Hornádom fabric, Senohradská embroidery, Liptov bobbin lace and Piešťany mud.
The law also regulates administrative fees. Fees are abolished, or rather exemptions in connection with fees for acts of the Industrial Property Office (ÚPV) of the Slovak Republic in connection with international applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty. The law comes into force on 1 January 2026.
The plenary also approved the amendment proposal of the coalition member Michal Bartek (Hlas-SD), which amends the law on environmental impact assessment. The changes in this law concern acceleration zones and acceleration zone administrators. They respond to the requirements resulting from consultations with the European Commission on fulfilling the requirements of the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic.odkaz na stránku |
