| Artificial intelligence will not replace craftsmen, their salaries are rising |

| Slovakia is experiencing an acute shortage of skilled craftsmen, with wages in several craft professions growing faster than average in recent years. This is according to an analysis by the personnel agency Transfer Slovakia, which was based on the lists of shortage professions of the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic for the third quarter of 2026 and the Labor Market Barometer from the Alliance of Sector Councils. The agency assumes that the value of these professions will continue to grow in the era of automation and artificial intelligence.
Seven regions lack assembly workers in mechanical engineering, and six lack welders and metalworkers. “The fact that welders and metalworkers are among the shortage professions in three quarters of the regions is a strong signal that this is not just a local or short-term problem. This indicates a wider shortage of qualified workers with professional experience or qualifications,” pointed out Tomáš Kušmirek, sales manager at Transfer Slovakia. Truck drivers are even more in demand, with all regions reporting a shortage.
The data also shows a recovery in the construction sector. The Bratislava region has the widest list of missing professions in this area, where bricklayers, carpenters, concrete workers, tilers and tinsmiths are missing. On the contrary, the smallest shortage in this category is in the Prešov and Banská Bystrica regions.
“Most craft job opportunities are created in regions with more intensive construction in the west of Slovakia. However, available applicants are located in other parts of the country. Their movement for work is complicated by the costs of housing, transport and family ties. The shortage is also exacerbated by the aging of experienced craftsmen and the insufficient number of young people entering the given professions,” explained Kušmirek.
This is also shown by the growth in wages in positions such as tinsmith and carpenter. According to the Labor Market Barometer of the Alliance of Sector Councils, wages in these professions also grew significantly faster than average. The salary of a plumber has increased by more than a third since 2020 to the current 1,993 euros, while a carpenter has improved by 42.5% to 1,385 euros.
Kušmirek is convinced that in the future, workers with a combined technical profile will be particularly successful. "For example, machinists who also know how to set up CNC equipment and work with measuring equipment, or electricians with knowledge of automation. Combined positions have only rarely appeared in regional lists so far. Nevertheless, we see them as an emerging, although not yet fully established, trend," he stated.
