| Six states led by Germany reject multiannual EU budget |

| Six EU member states, led by Germany, have confirmed their rejection of a large-scale increase in the long-term budget of the community. Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Finland and Sweden agree that the budget must be reduced by several hundred billion euros compared to the European Commission's proposal, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Thursday after talks with the leaders of the other five states in Berlin. TASR reports this based on a report by the DPA agency.
"These cuts will have to affect all areas," Merz stressed, adding that the group of states will enter negotiations with Brussels with a common position. The Chancellor recalled that Germany, together with the other five states, finances 40% of the EU budget. "We are not stingy, but the European Commission's proposals do not correspond to the times," Merz noted.
The heads of state and government in the EU are trying to reach an agreement on the budget, if possible by the end of this year. The Commission is proposing a budget of around €1.76 trillion (in 2025 prices). The EU budget, officially called the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), must be unanimously approved by all 27 member states. Merz reiterated that the aim is to reach an agreement by the end of 2026. “It doesn’t have to happen, but it would be good if we could do it,” he added.
