E-commerce growth continues and increases demand for logistics space
Bratislava, 19.05.2025
E-commerce continues to reshape the European logistics market. Across Europe, 1.4 to 1.9 million square meters of new logistics space will be needed annually to meet growing demand. The Slovak e-commerce market stagnated or even declined after the pandemic, but has seen renewed growth in the past year. This development is increasing demand for industrial construction, especially near densely populated areas. This is according to the latest analysis by Prologis, a global logistics real estate company. “E-commerce penetration in continental Europe is above 10% and continues to grow, but still does not reach the level of the UK, which is the leader in Europe with a share of over 30%,” said Eva van der Pluijm-Kok, Vice President, Prologis EU Research. "By 2030, we expect this share to grow by a third. This will require significant investments in logistics and supply infrastructure, which will allow us to respond flexibly to changing consumer shopping behavior," she emphasized. Although Slovakia is one of the countries with a lower e-commerce penetration rate within the EU, it has recorded significant growth over the past year. According to an analysis by Heureka, the volume of online purchases increased by 6% in 2024, and even by 7% in the last quarter. The rapid growth of online purchases in Europe is also being contributed by the expansion of platforms such as Shein, Alibaba, and Temu - in Spain they account for up to 34% of all e-commerce orders, while in Germany their market share has more than tripled since 2022.odkaz na stránku
