The National Assembly of the Slovak Republic rejected the taxation of lump-sum compensation for MPs and members of the government
Bratislava, 18.06.2025
Politicians should at least symbolically participate in the consolidation of public finances. The lump sum compensations of members of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic, the President of the Slovak Republic and members of the Government of the Slovak Republic should therefore be taxed with a withholding tax at a rate of 19%. This follows from the proposal of opposition deputies from the Slovakia movement, which the deputies of the NR of the Slovak Republic did not move to the second reading on Tuesday. According to the proposers, the lump sum compensations of politicians do not reflect their actual costs of performing their duties and, regardless of their actual expenses, they are entitled to them every month. “In order to finance all these unnecessary expenses, the government has imposed a huge auction on the people of the Slovak Republic caused by consolidation measures and is asking the people to tighten their belts, while government politicians refuse to participate in this consolidation, which is impoverishing the people,” the opposition deputies stated in the explanatory statement. The proponents calculated that if the proposal were adopted, the monthly salary of politicians would decrease by 608 euros for MPs, or 521 euros if they have permanent residence in Bratislava. In the case of the President of the Slovak Republic, it would be 252.27 euros, in the case of ministers, 898 euros, in the case of the Deputy Prime Minister, 1,013 euros, and in the case of the Prime Minister, 1,303 euros. odkaz na stránku
