Tax revenue on sweetened beverages will be higher by 20 million euros
Bratislava, 03.07.2025
Revenues from the new tax on sweetened soft drinks, introduced in January this year, are in line with expectations in the long term. The assumptions about a significant initial pre-stocking did not materialize, and the revenue estimate for 2025 was increased by 20 million euros to approximately 89 million euros. This is stated by the Ministry of Finance (MF) of the Slovak Republic in its current tax forecast, adding that the estimated revenue from this tax for the following years will not change compared to the previous February prediction. It should gradually grow to almost 99 million euros in 2029. The Ministry of Finance also estimated the impact of the new tax on the consumption of sweetened soft drinks. Their sales fell at the beginning of the year, by approximately 7% in number of units and by 11% in volume of sweetened drinks. "A comparison of data from the eKasa of the 10 largest retail chains for the period January to May 2024 and 2025 shows a decrease in sales of sweetened beverages. While traditional sweetened beverages decreased by 12% and syrups by 6%, energy drinks increased by 8%. Consumption has partially shifted to smaller beverage packages," the Ministry of Finance said. It also pointed out that the increase in prices of sweetened beverages was higher than their additional tax burden. While at the beginning of the year the price increase corresponded to the increase in the tax burden, in the following months there was a further increase in prices, especially for traditional sweetened beverages. "The average price per liter of traditional sweetened beverages increased by 24% month-on-month immediately after the introduction of the tax, it grew in the following months and in May reached an increase of 41% compared to December 2024," the ministry calculated. Energy drinks also saw a slight acceleration in price growth, from 12% in January to 14% in May. The price of syrups fell slightly in January compared to December, but then increased and was 36% higher in May compared to December.odkaz na stránku
