| China promises aid to Hong Kong, Macao |
| Bejing, 25.12.2008 |
 |
| Premier Wen Jiabao announced on Friday plans that would help the special administrative regions (SAR) of Hong Kong and Macao cope with the global financial crisis.
“The motherland will aways provide a reliable backing for Hong Kong,” Wen told chief Executive Donald Tsang in a meeting.
The central government will promote financial cooperation between the mainland and the SAR to help Hong Kong weather the effects of the financial crisis.
Beijing also promised to help upgrade infrastructure construction and grant favorable policies for small- and medium-sized enterprises, Xinhua reported.
More mainland tourists will also be encouraged to visit the region, the Premier said, as part of a 14-step plan to help the island which has been heavily hit by the global economic downturn.
“The mainland will also ensure stable food, water, electricity and natural gas supply for the region and further open its service industry market to HKSAR,” the Premier said.
Wen made similar promises to Macao Special Administrative Region Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau-wah.
“The central government will unswervingly support Macao to overcome difficulties and maintain a stable economic development in the region,” he said.
Both Tsang and Hau-wah were in Beijing to brief the central government on regional work.
According to Reuters, the steps taken by the mainland will help prevent “an erosion of pro-mainland sentiment in Hong Kong” that has been bolstered by China's economic boom and the recent Olympics.
Hong Kong's economy has not recovered from the tourist slump sparked by the SARS outbreak in 2003. It has lowered its growth forecast for 2009 to between 3 to 3.5 percent.
