Slovakia is the Only EU Country Hosting Chinese President
Bratislava, 18.06.2009
Slovakia is the only EU country which will host Chinese President Hu Jintao during his European tour that arrives here June 18-19 – and begins by meeting Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic. This will be the first visit of the head of China to Slovakia since the country was established in 1993, and it will mark the 60th anniversary of the forming of the Peoples Republic of China and the 60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic contacts between China and Slovakia, which used to be Czechoslovakia at that time. Gasparovic and Hu Jintao will discuss the current bilateral and multilateral issues. The talks will concentrate on relations between the EU and China, as Slovakia fully supports the idea of the EU's open dialogue and strategic partnership with the East-Asian giant. The EU is currently China's biggest business partner and China is, after the USA, the second biggest business partner of EU. The two heads of states will meet at business breakfast on Friday, accompanied by Slovak Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek, Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming and representatives of the business sector from both states. Chinese President will also meet Slovak Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska and Prime Minister Robert Fico during the visit. Mutual relations between the countries are concentrated mainly in the economic sphere, where China represents one of Slovakia's most important Asian business partners. In 2008, mutual trade reached €3.2 billion, with Slovakia's export representing €432.7 million. During 1Q09, however, there was a drop of 39 percent year-on-year which was attributable to the global economic crisis. Slovakia has established itself on the Chinese market mainly in the field of energy, gastronomy and pharmaceuticals and is interested in strengthening investment activities in tourism.
