| Obama vows to double exports over 5 years |
| Washington, 27.01.2010 |
 |
| WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Increasing U.S. exports will help the economy recover and create jobs, President Barack Obama said Wednesday as he announced a new export goal.
"We will double our exports over the next five years, an increase that will support 2 million jobs in America," Obama pledged during his first State of the Union before a joint session of Congress.
To help reach the goal, he announced implementation of a National Export Initiative that will help U.S. farmers and small businesses increase their exports, and reform export controls to better align with national security.
Realizing benefits from increased trade means enforcing agreements "so our trading partners play by the rules," Obama said.
He pledged to shape a trade Doha trade agreement that opens global markets and strengthening trade relations in Asia and with partners such as South Korea, Panama and Columbia.
"If America sits on the sidelines while other nations sign trade deals," Obama said, "we will lose the chance to create jobs on our shores."
