Yanukovych sworn in as Ukraine president
Kiev, 25.02.2010
KIEV - Viktor Yanukovych has been sworn in as Ukraine's fourth president amid a continued political dispute with his defeated rival, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Yanukovych took his oath in parliament in a ceremony attended by a host of international dignitaries. International officials attending the ceremony include EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton, U.S. national security adviser James Jones, and speaker of the Russian parliament Boris Gryzlov. He takes over from the widely unpopular Viktor Yushchenko, who led the pro-democracy Orange Revolution that was sparked by a falsified presidential runoff awarded to Yanukovych five years ago. Yanukovych has called on Tymoshenko, another symbol of the 2004 revolution, to resign after her narrow defeat in the February 7 presidential runoff. Tymoshenko has sought to persuade parliament to hold a vote of confidence in the government, but her request has been rejected on technicalities. If parliament rejects a no-confidence vote, Tymoshenko's government would be able to stay on in power until July as only one such motion is allowed per session. odkaz na stránku
