Slovakia votes in referendum on parliamentary reform
Bratislava, 19.09.2010
Slovaks headed to the polls on Saturday in a referendum on controversial proposals to downsize parliament, cut the privileges of politicians, and abolish radio and television license fees. Leading politicians from both government and opposition ranks have criticized the referendum, which was initiated by the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) in the run-up to parliamentary elections in June, The newly formed SaS attracted so much media attention that it was able to win seats in parliament and a place in the centre-right coalition government that took power in July. Under the constitution, the president had to call the referendum after more than 350,000 eligible voters signed a petition initiated by the SaS. For the referendum to be valid, at least 50 per cent of the country's 4.3 million voters will have to cast ballots on Saturday. SaS leader Richard Sulik, who now serves as speaker of parliament, has conceded several times that he does not believe the quorum will be reached. Six referendums have been held in Slovakia since it gained independence in 1993, but only one drew out the required number of voters - the poll that paved the way for Slovakia to join the European Union.
