| Set up of credit line to support trade between the two countries
The Governments of Portugal and Russia will sign several economic agreements today involving the financial sector, shipping and railway building, a Government source told Lusa news agency.
The agreements are being signed at a time when Vladimir Putin is paying an official visit to Portugal which comes before the summit between the Russian Federation and the European Union, on Friday, in Mafra, north of Lisbon.
One of the most important agreements is the one between Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the state owned bank, and the Russian bank, Vnesheconombank.
According to the Government source this will allow for a credit line of 200 million euros to be opened to finance investments and trade between the two countries.
The agreement between the banks stipulates that they provide 'mutual cooperation in identifying and developing export opportunities in Portuguese and Russian goods and services.'
The agreement also wants to boost direct investment by companies in both countries, particularly in infrasctructure projects.
Industrial, technical and commercial cooperation
Within the framework of the Russian premier's visit, the Portuguese company Empordef is signing an agreement of bilateral cooperation with Admiralty Shipyards, a Russian company. The cooperation is in areas such as industry, technical help and commerce to develop the shipping business.
The two companies have agreed to 'strengthen bilateral cooperation in the naval industry through the development of specific projects which include hiring services, buying and selling material and equipment for ship building...'
The project foresees 'providing mutual aid in management, production and information technologies in shipping,' said the same source.
The two Government are also expected to oversee an agreement between Russian and Portuguese companies with a view to a public tender to build a highway through the Russian Federation.

Russian president hopes for Portuguese support at Mafra summit

Putin meets with President Cavaco Silva
The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, dined with President Cavaco Silva on Thursday night. He emphasised there was 'friendship and trust' in the relationships between the two countries, adding that both countries shared the same values and had 'similar' positions in regards to grave problems of current affairs.
'The negotiations that took place today in Lisbon have given us another strong indication that between both parties there is friendship and trust,' said Vladimir Putin in a brief and improvised speech during the official banquet held in his honour by the Portuguese president, Cavaco Silva, at Ajuda Palace in Lisbon.
'We share the same values and have similar position about how to resolve grave problems of current affairs,' he stressed.
Putin expressed his 'pleasure' at being back in Portugal and hailed the 'growth of relations in various areas' which was achieved during this short official visit - his second - on the eve of the European Union-Russia summit which will be held in Mafra, on the outskirts of Lisbon.
Before him, Cavaco Silva had urged that the dialogue between the EU and Russia should have 'solid grounds' of confidence and mutual respect, though Putin avoided the subject, preferring to speak instead of the relations between Portugal and Russia.
Putin assured that in relation to both countries 'there are no problems standing in our way' and that all matters between the two countries were 'always discussed with openness' in keeping with the spirit of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed in Moscow in 1994.
'That is still the solid basis of our relations,' he stressed.
Insisting that 'friendship' and 'good cooperation' are the pillars of the relations between Russia and Portugal, Putin noted that there were various 'similarities' between the two capitals, pointing out that they both share the same patron saint and have seven hilltops.

Putin was speaking upon his arrival at the Portuguese PM's official residence, São Bento, 40 minutes after the scheduled time. Putin thanked Sócrates for the 'warm reception' with which he was greeted by Portuguese authorities.
'We are counting on your support and on your help in our talks with the European Union,' said the head of the Russian State, speaking to José Sócrates.
The Prime Minister retorted saying he was confident in the results of the EU-Russia summit on Friday, which he described as being 'of the utmost importance.'
'I am sure that this conversation will help strengthen the political, economic and cultural ties between Portugal and Russia, honouring in this manner our common history,' said Sócrates.
Putin added that Russia was 'open to a frank dialogue' and that it wants to develop economic and commercial relations with Portugal. 'Life doesn't sit still,' commented Putin after remembering Sócrates official visit to Russia last May.
