This year's sugar beet crop is expected to be five to seven percent higher than in the previous two years, according to current estimates. This was stated by sugar beet growers and representatives of sugar refineries during the Sugar Beet Day in Oponice, which are launching their sugar production campaign. "We expect yields at a level of 65 to 66 tons per hectare," stated Róbert Kovács, chairman of the board of the Association of Sugar Beet Growers. The qualitative parameters of the beet have been influenced by favorable weather and less pressure from pests and diseases. "Abundant rains, a cold May, and the difference between day and night temperatures are all factors that positively influenced the parameters of the beet. This year, cicadas, which are carriers of a dangerous disease known as low sugar syndrome, were almost nonexistent," Kovács assessed. The area under sugar beet this year has decreased by 18 percent compared to last year, reaching 19,180 hectares. "Two years ago and last year, the price per ton of sugar beet rose above 40 euros. Due to the enormous increase in areas in the European Union.due to imports from Ukraine, there has been a sharp drop in prices. Now we are worried whether we will even reach a selling price of 30 euros per ton. This is almost below the cost of production, which is why we have reduced the sown areas," said Kovács. Sugar factories expect that the decline in area will be offset by the yield and sugar content of the beet. "From this year's campaign, we expect sugar production to be between 165,000 and 170,000 tons. This should almost completely cover Slovakia's self-sufficiency in this commodity," said Michal Abelovič, chairman of the board of Považský sugar.odkaz na stránku |
