| European Commission approves German support for charging infrastructure |
| Brusel, 18.12.2025 |
 |
| The European Commission (EC) on Wednesday approved a state funding program in Germany worth 1.6 billion euros for the development of fast charging stations for electric trucks. According to the decision, the support does not harm competition in the European Union. TASR reports this based on a report by the DPA agency.
The funds are intended for the construction of a comprehensive charging infrastructure along the German motorway network. The program envisages the installation of up to 1,410 charging stations for electric commercial vehicles at more than 120 rest areas that are currently unused. The charging infrastructure will be managed by the national motorway company Autobahn GmbH. According to the charging infrastructure manager, there are currently around 250 public charging stations for trucks in Germany. The funding will be provided in the form of direct grants of recurring payments that will cover part of the construction and operating costs.
The station operators will be determined by a tender procedure. A special fee is also planned, which will be included in the price for using the infrastructure and will be paid back to the state budget by the operators. Electric trucks are still not widely used in Germany. According to EC data, in April 2025, only 0.37% of heavy trucks registered in the country had an electric drive.
