| About 90 employees will be laid off from the Trenčianská Teplá sugar refinery, some of whom will be terminated today |

| More than 90 employees will be laid off from the sugar factory in Trenčianská Tepla in connection with the termination of sugar production and sugar beet processing. Some of them will not come to work on Friday (6 February). This was announced by the chairman of the board of directors of Považský cukor, Michal Abelovič, at a briefing on Thursday.
"Employees whose task was to start maintenance and preparation for a new beet campaign, which will no longer take place, will not come to work on Friday. They will receive their average wage until March 18, when the legal deadline for mass layoffs is. We will then agree on further steps and compensation with representatives of the basic trade union," Abelovič explained.
As reported by board member Tomáš Adámek, the beet campaign ended at the sugar factory last week. A "heavy juice" campaign is currently underway, where the syrup stored in the tank is processed into sugar. It should end around March 15-16, with mass layoffs to be announced on March 18. The facilities will then be cleaned and moved to other Nordzucker Group sugar factories.
Sugar production and sugar beet processing will end at Považský cukor in Trenčianská Teplá. The company will continue and expand its activities as a trading and logistics center supplying the domestic market and other markets in southeastern Europe.
According to Abelovič, the main reason for the cessation of sugar beet processing and sugar production in Trenčianská Teplá is climate change, which is shifting the sugar beet growing zone further and further north.
"Climate change has brought a lot of pathogens to sugar beet in recent years, its yields have been declining. In 2024, we expected to produce 100,000 tons of sugar, but we only produced 80,000 tons. Despite the support that sugar beet receives in the form of coupled payments, sugar beet production among growers is not what they would have expected," added Abelovič.
The sugar factory in Trenčianská Teplá is the southernmost sugar factory owned by the German company Nordzucker Group. It is also the only one of the company's 15 sugar factories in Europe where sugar production will end.
