EP adopts new rules to protect farmers from unfair trading practices
EU, 12.02.2026
MEPs voted on Thursday in favour of new measures to protect European farmers from unfair trading practices by those who buy agricultural products. The TASR reporter reports. By a vote of 555 in favour, none against and 26 abstentions, MEPs gave final approval to new rules that oblige national authorities to cooperate on unfair trading practices to ensure that farmers receive a fair return for their work. Cross-border unfair trading practices that harm farmers and small producers of agricultural products will thus be prevented, investigated and punished. To strengthen the protection of farmers, the new legislation will allow member states to automatically intervene and stop cross-border unfair trading practices on their own initiative, without the need for a complaint from the producer. This system will copy the regime for the protection of geographical indications in the single market. The new rules also seek to protect manufacturers from unfair trading practices by buyers from outside the EU, preventing operators from circumventing the law by moving outside the EU. Buyers based outside the EU will have to designate an "EU contact person" in the event of an investigation against them. This person will be the main point of contact for law enforcement authorities and will be required to facilitate investigations into unfair trading practices. The approved regulation allows national law enforcement authorities to inform each other about unfair trading practices or the risk of them occurring via the Internal Market Information System. This exchange is intended to have a deterrent effect and ensure rapid and coordinated responses to stop unfair trading practices. The new rules still need to be approved by the EU Council (member states). They will apply 18 months after their publication in the EU Official Journal. odkaz na stránku
