| Cheaper imports crowd out domestic producers |

| Grain, flour and bread are the last bastion of Slovakia's food security and self-sufficiency. Although we export wheat in large quantities, around one million tons per year, in recent years flour imports have been increasing, reaching around one hundred thousand tons per year. Slovak mills grind 450-470 thousand tons of wheat, but they can process almost twice that amount. Despite this, part of the added value ends up abroad.
Flour comes to Slovakia mainly from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and there is also talk of Ukrainian flour, but the research conducted by the editorial team revealed Czech flour on the shelves of chains. However, there are wholesalers here, the largest of whom say that they work with flour originating from Slovak wheat fields, and more modestly admit that deliveries from neighbors from the V4 are also a reality. The Slovak millers' association is struggling to breathe due to the fact that flour imports have been increasing over the past four years. The year 2023 was a milestone, when, a year after the Russian aggression on Ukraine, flour imports from abroad increased by almost 12,500 tons year-on-year, and the following year it was already 15,000 tons of flour, minus a few tons. Statistics for 2025 are not yet known, but millers fear that imports will break the psychological threshold of one hundred thousand tons. You have to pay extra for extra quality, the price doubles and premium flour, by the way, Czech import, costs up to 1.39 euros, which is a price worthy of preparing a meal in a Michelin restaurant. Ordinary flour and how many price levels it has, which express how Slovak society has been stratified over the last 35 years, its income and purchasing power. Even flour and the dozens of types of bread and pastries baked from it testify to the end of egalitarianism in society and the various options of consumers.
