The average pension is insufficient for most Slovaks
Bratislava, 02.04.2026
Retirement means a significant drop in income of approximately 600 euros per month for the average Slovak. According to a survey by the Ipsos agency, the average pension is satisfactory for only about a tenth of Slovaks. This is according to an analysis by the Port investment platform. An employee with an income at the average wage level will have a net monthly income drop from approximately 1,300 euros to 703 euros after retirement. "If we include the thirteenth pension in this calculation, the amount of which is currently frozen at 667.30 euros, we will get to 759 euros, which the average pensioner can count on per month. This is approximately 58% of his previous income," said Port analyst Marek Malina. However, such an income level is insufficient for most people. According to a survey by Ipsos for Porta, only 11.2% of respondents would be satisfied with a pension of 800 euros. Almost 60% would expect at least 1,000 euros per month. Demographics are the main reason for this unfavorable development. The number of Slovaks has been declining for a long time and the population is aging. Today, there are not even three workers for every pensioner. In the last quarter of last year, approximately 2.6 million people worked in Slovakia, while the number of old-age pensioners is approaching 1.2 million. "This ratio is only expected to worsen in the future. It is therefore questionable how long a state whose public finances are facing high deficits will have enough resources to maintain the current level of pensions," Malina warned. odkaz na stránku
