The EC has set the amount of the carbon tax
EU, 08.04.2026
The European Union has set the level of the carbon tax applied at its borders. In the first quarter, it is at the level of 75.36 euros per tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2), the European Commission (EC) announced on Tuesday. TASR reports this based on a report by the orf.at portal. The climate protection instrument, which aims to make certain imports into the EU more expensive, is becoming financially tangible for the first time. The price applies to certificates under the Carbon Border Offsetting Mechanism (CBAM). It is based on which carbon dioxide emissions that arise during the production of imported goods, such as steel, aluminum, cement and fertilizers, are charged. This is intended to prevent the transfer of production from the EU to countries with less stringent climate protection requirements. For businesses, the new reference value serves as a guideline for how much importers have to pay at the EU border for the CO2 emissions associated with the production of certain goods. The levies will apply retroactively to imports from January 2026. Companies will only have to buy the certificates needed for this purpose in 2027. The new tariff has already sparked controversy due to the war with Iran. At the end of March, the EC rejected a request from France, Italy and Croatia to suspend the levy on imported fertilisers. This was intended to bring relief to farmers struggling with high prices. But the suspension risks deepening import dependency, said EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen. The Commission plans to discuss measures to support fertiliser production in Europe with industry representatives on 13 April. The CBAM system has been in its final phase since the start of the year. A multi-year transitional period, during which importers of goods from third countries were only required to declare, expired at the end of last year. This year, Brussels wants to set four quarterly prices. The price for the second quarter is expected to be announced on July 6. Starting in 2027, prices are expected to be published on a weekly basis.odkaz na stránku
