ERRA: There are problems with the European electricity pricing model
Bratislava, 28.04.2026
The problems of the European electricity pricing model were one of the topics discussed by more than 300 energy regulators and experts from around the world at the annual conference of the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA) in Bratislava. The association's chairwoman, Andrijana Nelkova-Chuchuk, and the chairman of the Network Industries Regulatory Authority (ÚRSO), Jozef Holjenčík, agreed that this is a problem that requires joint professional pressure to change the rules. "The current European electricity pricing model is set up in such a way that the final price for everyone is determined by the most expensive source needed at the given moment, and these are mostly gas sources. This means that high costs for gas and emission allowances are passed on to consumers in an uncontrolled manner, regardless of the fact that we have much cheaper electricity from our own clean sources at our disposal," explained Holjenčík, who is calling for an adjustment to the formula according to which the exchange operates. According to him, a solution could also be a temporary return to regional markets that can react more flexibly. ÚRSO is also promoting the separation of the selling price of electricity from the price of natural gas, the regulation of the profits of electricity traders and the capping of emission allowance prices, which according to Holjenčík are too high. ERRA is also aware of the problem. "There are many other countries that are affected by this method of pricing. And that is why we have gathered here in Slovakia to discuss this issue and find out what solutions we can propose," said Nelkova-Chuchuk, according to whom a multidisciplinary approach is needed. Holjenčík also touched on the topic of gas prices at the press conference. The reference period for 2027 is currently running, according to which the gas price will be set. "Based on the data I have so far, we do not expect any dramatic increase in the price of natural gas, unless, of course, another war breaks out," said the chairman of ÚRSO. odkaz na stránku
