| In 2025, 16.7% of the population in Slovakia, or over 895,000 people, were at risk of poverty or social exclusion. The number of people at risk of poverty decreased by almost 85,000 people year-on-year. In 2024, the share of people at risk of income poverty or who are severely materially and socially deprived or live in households with very low work intensity increased to 18.3%. The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic (ŠÚ) reported on Thursday the results of the 2025 Household Income and Living Conditions Survey (EU SILC).
In Slovakia, one in six people faced one or more dimensions of poverty in 2025. However, the share and number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion decreased year-on-year after four years of growth, while the situation improved year-on-year in only six of the eight regions of the Slovak Republic. However, an unfavorable shift occurred in multi-child and single-parent households.
From a regional perspective, the most favorable situation was in the Bratislava, Žilina and Trnava regions, where poverty affected less than 10% of the population. The situation was significantly worse in the Košice, Banská Bystrica and Prešov regions, where 23% to 30% of the population faced poverty. The most significant decrease in poverty was recorded in the Bratislava region from 8.6% in 2024 to 2.9% last year and in the Žilina region from 13.7% to last year's 8%.
The situation worsened year-on-year in two regions of Slovakia. In the Banská Bystrica region, the number of people at risk increased by almost 17,000 and 26.1% of the population was affected by poverty. In the Prešov Region, 16,000 more people were poor, and the rate rose to 29.9%, facing almost every third resident of the region, i.e. approximately 240,000 people.
In terms of the incidence of poverty, households with children are significantly more at risk than households without children. The worst situation was in single-parent households, where one adult lived with one or more children. As many as 50% (32,000) of people living in this type of household faced poverty, which was the highest value in history.
A high proportion of poor people was also found in households of two adults with three or more dependent children, of which 38% of people suffered from poverty. The situation worsened year-on-year in both types of households. Within households without children, single-person households of women under the age of 65 were most affected by the risk of poverty, with a share of 26.3%.
Among the three dimensions of poverty or social exclusion, the most people in Slovakia are at risk of so-called income poverty. In 2025, the national threshold for a single-person household was 7,794 euros per year, or 650 euros per month. The calculations used the annual household income for 2024. In 2025, 12.2% of the population of the Slovak Republic lived below the income poverty threshold, which was almost 652,000 people. Their number decreased significantly year-on-year by almost 127,000 people.odkaz na stránku |
