| The European Commission asks EU member states to sign a trade agreement with India. |

| On Friday, the European Commission (EC) submitted proposals to the Council of the EU (representing member states) for the signing and conclusion of a free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and India, requesting authorization to proceed with these steps. A TASR correspondent reported the news.
If approved by the Council of the EU, this will be the largest trade agreement ever concluded between the EU and India.
Once adopted and entered into force, the agreement will improve market access, lower tariffs, eliminate unnecessary trade barriers, and establish predictable rules for trade and investment between the EU and India.
The EU and India already trade goods and services worth over €180 billion annually, supporting nearly 800,000 jobs within the EU.
The trade agreement will eliminate or reduce tariffs on 96% of goods exported from the EU to India. Overall, tariff reductions will save approximately €4 billion annually in duties on European products. European companies will gain easier access to the Indian market, competition will take place on a more level playing field, and the agreement will ensure that consumers benefit from a wider choice and more competitive prices. The European Commission's proposal on Friday marks a key step toward ensuring that consumers and businesses can reap the benefits of the trade agreement with India as soon as possible, in line with the accelerated procedure outlined earlier this year by Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security.
The aim of this procedure is to fast-track the implementation of free trade agreements, which are of vital importance in a time of geopolitical uncertainty and mounting pressure on the global trading system.
The EU-India free trade agreement reflects the EU's commitment to strengthening economic ties with key partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
