| Nippon Steel's entry into U.S. Steel is good news for Slovakia. |
| Bratislava, 16.09.2026 |
 |
| On Tuesday, Slovak Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (an SNS nominee) signed two agreements with representatives of the steel company U.S. Steel – Nippon Steel Slovakia to provide funding from the Modernization Fund for the decarbonization of steel production and the decarbonization of technical gas production. Total investment in the two projects will exceed €743 million, with nearly €350 million coming from sources outside the state budget.
After signing the documents, Taraba noted that the Košice steelworks employs 8,500 people, with additional jobs provided by subcontractors. "It is a huge opportunity for Slovakia that we succeeded in persuading the Japanese investors to keep the plant in eastern Slovakia," he stated. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) commended the head of the environment ministry regarding the agreement with Nippon Steel. "I thank everyone involved for the decision you have made for the future of steel production in Slovakia. I am counting on the Japanese investors to successfully take the baton from the American company," he added.
