Pigagro will lose over 18,000 pigs
Bratislava, 06.05.2025
African swine fever has been confirmed on a farm in Dolné Semerovce in the Levice district. The Danish agricultural company Pigagro will lose 18,458 fattening pigs. Their inevitable depopulation begins on Monday, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic reported. The company's management does not want to comment on the situation and the damage. The company is one of the market leaders in pig production. The farm has a production capacity for 4,000 sows and the company produces approximately 130,000 pigs for the Slovak market annually. Animal production is located on four farms. Since 2001, all operations have undergone extensive reconstruction. The reproduction farm, where insemination and births are carried out, is the operation in Jesenské in the Rimavská Sobota district. The fattening farms, where piglets are concentrated immediately after weaning, are located in Dolné Semerovce in the Levice district, in Svodín and in Bruty in the Nové Zámky district. Already in 2008, the company had to destroy approximately 21,000 animals from farms in Jesenské and Dolné Semerovce infected with classical swine fever. Approximately 14,000 pigs were destroyed in Jesenské, 7,000 pigs in Dolné Semerovce. The company suffered damage of approximately 100 million crowns, but the company's managing director Peter Munk Laursen did not specify the total amount. African swine fever affected two Pigagro farms in 2021. In Jesenské, 3,650 sows and over 20,000 piglets and weaners had to be culled, and in Bruty, a fattening pig farm with around 20,000 animals had to be culled. Pigagro has been operating on the Slovak market since 2001. It owns five farms, and its headquarters are located on a vegetable farm in Ipežský Sokolec in the Levice district. It manages 3,000 hectares of land and employs around a hundred people. odkaz na stránku
