The number of corporate bankruptcies in Western Europe increased significantly last year |

The number of corporate bankruptcies in Western Europe last year was the highest since 2013. TASR reports this based on a DPA report, which on Tuesday referred to data from Creditreform.
The company registered 190,449 insolvencies, which represents an increase of 12.2% compared to the previous year. “Three years of stagnation and economic decline have not only gripped Germany. The whole of Europe is suffering from weak economic growth,” said Patrik-Ludwig Hantzsch, head of economic research at Creditreform. According to the analysis, the number of insolvencies in Western Europe has increased by almost 70% since 2021, when 112,686 corporate bankruptcies were declared.
Rising energy prices, weak demand and geopolitical uncertainty pose a great burden for many companies, while the ongoing crises in recent years have left companies with few opportunities for recovery or further growth, Creditreform said. In 15 of the 17 Western European countries included in its analysis, the number of insolvency cases increased year-on-year.
France accounted for more than a third of corporate bankruptcies in Western Europe, with 66,088 cases, up 17.4% from the previous year. The most significant increases were recorded in Greece, up 42.5% to 2,012 cases, as well as in Ireland (up 32% to 875) and the Netherlands (up 31.7% to 3,782). In Germany, Europe’s largest economy, 22,070 companies filed for insolvency last year, up 22.5% from 2023. |
