The Eurobarometer also indicated financial concerns about the future expansion of the EU.
Brusel, 03.09.2025
The vast majority of citizens of European Union (EU) countries, including Slovakia, call on member states to tackle current global challenges collectively and to allocate more funding for this purpose. At the same time, Europeans are concerned about the financial costs of future EU enlargement. This is evident from a new Eurobarometer survey for the European Parliament (EP) published on Wednesday. The Brussels correspondent for TASR reports this. The survey, conducted between February and March among a sample of over 26,300 citizens from 27 member states, indicated that 56 percent of Europeans support further EU enlargement. They are convinced that their own country would benefit from future enlargement. 59% of Slovaks see the advantages of enlargement, perceiving as the biggest benefits more business opportunities and the spread of innovations, and more opportunities to utilize skilled labor and expertise. In the economic area, however, respondents expressed concerns about the financial costs of expansion and emphasized that new member states should respect the conditionality of accessing EU funds by adhering to the principles of the rule of law and fighting corruption - at the EU level, 85% of respondents demand this, as well as in Slovakia. Ninety percent of EU citizens and 88% of Slovaks call on member states to address global challenges together. The majority believe that the EU needs more resources for this - 77% in the EU and 71% in Slovakia. The survey showed that 78% of EU citizens and 73% of Slovak citizens believe that the Union as a whole should finance more projects. Respondents agree that the EU will need new sources of income for the EU budget - in Slovakia, this is 79% of respondents, which is higher than the EU average of 73%.When asked about the impacts of measures on the everyday life of citizens that the EP should prioritize, the survey showed that inflation, rising prices, and cost of living (41%) were at the top, followed by defense and security (34%), and poverty reduction and social exclusion (31%).According to Slovak citizens, the key topics for the EP should be inflation, rising prices, and cost of living (53%), support for the economy and job creation (42%), and agriculture and food security (32%).
