Digital euro can help people in times of crisis. |

The digital version of the euro is necessary for the citizens of the eurozone to continue being able to pay even in the event of major disruptions to daily life, such as a power outage in Spain, cable interruptions in the Baltic Sea, or cyberattacks on banks. This was stated by Piero Cipollone, a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), during a session of the European Parliament (EP), as reported by TASR's correspondent.Cipollone, who appeared before the members of the EP Committee on Economic Affairs, warned that the digital euro will ensure that all Europeans can pay anytime with a free and universally accepted digital payment means, even in case of major disruptions. He emphasized to the MEPs that currently the core of European digital payment systems depends on providers outside the European Union, which could limit Europe's ability to act quickly and independently, "especially in times of crisis."The high-ranking ECB official reminded that payment services are "equally important"for everyday life like electricity or drinking water" and therefore must always be available. "This is especially important in today's world, which is characterized by rising political tensions and increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks," Cipollone stated. According to him, public authorities must ensure the continuity of these services in times of crisis, and as cash, the only security mechanism that currently exists, is increasingly being replaced by digital payments, this continuity needs to be supplemented by a digital version of the euro. "Incidents such as the sabotage of underwater cables in the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea are a reminder of how fragile our infrastructure can be. Disruptions are not just a consequence of geopolitical or security crises. Remember the power outages in Spain and Portugal last spring when many people could not pay because they didn't have cash on hand," Cipollone said. He clarified that in this context, digital euro can have a significant impact not only as a technological innovation, but also as a public good that strengthens Europe's resilience. The ECB has been working for several years on the preparation of a possible digital euro, although the decision to launch it will depend on the agreement of the eurozone member states. Eurozone finance ministers discuss this topic several times a year at their working meetings in Brussels or Luxembourg.odkaz na stránku |
