Stellantis and Leapmotor want to jointly produce an electric Opel SUV
Shanghai/Milano, 09.04.2026
The Stellantis automotive group is in advanced talks with Chinese carmaker Leapmotor to jointly develop an electric SUV for the Opel brand. The vehicle would use the Chinese carmaker's technology and be manufactured at Stellantis' Spanish plant in Zaragoza, TASR reported, citing three sources. odkaz na stránku If an agreement is reached, it would help Stellantis reduce the cost and time to develop a new electric car model, as the Franco-Italian automaker focuses on gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles. It could also fend off competition from BYD and other Chinese brands in Europe and improve the utilization rate of its European plants. Stellantis formed the partnership with Leapmotor after acquiring about a fifth of the Chinese carmaker in 2023. The companies have set up a joint venture, Leapmotor International, to sell and manufacture Leapmotor cars outside China. Opel's electric SUV is expected to share its architecture with the Chinese automaker's B10 SUV, which Leapmotor will also assemble for the European market at its Zaragoza plant, two sources said. Production of the new Opel model is expected to begin in 2028, with an annual production target of 50,000 vehicles, they said. In Europe, Stellantis' primary market, Opel sales accounted for about 21% of the Franco-Italian automaker's sales. Opel is sold the most in Germany. odkaz na stránku
