Hundreds of ATMs in Austria have reduced cash withdrawal limits
Viena, 02.08.2026
The limit for cash withdrawals from ATMs in Austria has been significantly reduced in many cases. Hundreds of machines currently have a limit of around 200 euros per withdrawal instead of the usual 400 euros. TASR reports this based on a report by the APA agency, which referred to the Austrian Central Bank (OeNB). The central bank is registering "partially lower withdrawal limits," a spokesman for the institution confirmed to the APA agency on Thursday (July 30). The 400 euro ceiling is a standard set by domestic banks, which most market participants adhere to, "however, no one is bound by this standard," the spokesman noted. "Independent ATM operators have decided to introduce partially lower withdrawal limits for business reasons," he explained. However, these do not affect the overall withdrawal limit set by the relevant bank where the clients have an account. Customers who need a larger amount can still make several consecutive withdrawals. ATM operators usually earn money based on the number of transactions - not on the volume of withdrawals, the spokesman said. "We are currently aware of one operator that has consistently reduced the withdrawal limit. To our knowledge, this affects several hundred of the approximately 8,900 ATMs throughout Austria," the OeNB representative continued. The 400 euro limit has been in place in Austria since the introduction of the euro on 1 January 2002. This ceiling has not been adjusted since then and could be considered for an increase, the spokesman concluded. odkaz na stránku
