| Sugar beet processing campaign approaches; sugar prices rally. |

| The start of the new and demanding sugar processing campaign in Slovakia (September 10) coincides with a period of gradual recovery in global sugar prices. This was stated by Jana Holéciová, spokesperson for the Slovak Agriculture and Food Chamber (SPPK).
"Developments in key global growing regions may contribute to this rise—specifically, a drop in sugar production in India, which has become a sugar-deficit country this year, as well as reduced sugar output in Brazil driven by higher oil prices and the diversion of production toward bioethanol. The El Niño climate phenomenon is also expected to negatively impact sugar production in South America. The recovery in global sugar prices will be reflected in the European market with a time lag," she explained.
Consequently, she noted, support mechanisms targeting the entire sugar supply chain—including options for expanding irrigation systems—remain crucial for the future of Slovak sugar. "The outcome of this year's sugar processing campaign will therefore be significant not only for the sugar refinery itself (in Sereď – TASR note) and the beet growers. It will demonstrate the extent to which the production of a staple foodstuff can be maintained in Slovakia amidst changing climatic and economic conditions," the SPPK spokesperson added.odkaz na stránku |
