| The Italian government has abolished the road tax for small and medium-sized cars. |
| Roma, 17.09.2026 |
 |
| On Wednesday, the Italian government abolished the road tax for small and medium-sized cars as well as motorcycles. The vehicle ownership tax is also being eliminated for low- and medium-power cars—the type most frequently used by families for daily commuting—the Prime Minister's office announced. TASR reports this based on information from the ANSA news agency.
The tax exemption also applies to motorcycles, with each citizen eligible to claim the benefit for only one vehicle. The measure covers all motorcycles and more than 70% of cars currently on the road, amounting to approximately 14.5 million vehicles in total. The move aims to alleviate the tax burden associated with car or motorcycle ownership for a large number of Italians.
"Today, the government is abolishing one of the taxes Italians dislike the most," noted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
According to the government decree, the motor vehicle tax exemption will apply in 2027 to vehicles with an engine power of up to 80 kilowatts (kW) and to mopeds, provided the owner is not already claiming the benefit for a car.odkaz na stránku |
