State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry of the Slovak Republic Rastislav Chovanec attended a trade-and-economic mission in Montenegro on 27-29 January 2025. He held negotiations with representatives of the Government of Montenegro as well as the entrepreneur sector in order to more intensively develop important opportunities in economic diplomacy in this region.
In Podgorica, the Government of Montenegro and the European Commission, along with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank, organized a presentation of a program for the development of transport infrastructure valued at approximately nine billion euros.
“Slovakia has long supported the European integration of the Western Balkans countries, which offer strong opportunities for investments and partnerships. Slovak companies could apply to carry out several projects in Montenegro. Great potential is also offered, for example, by creating possible international consortiums,” detailed Chovanec.
He also personally conveyed to Prime Minister of the Montenegrin Government Milojko Spajić the readiness of the Slovak Republic to actively engage in building transport infrastructure here. With regards to this, the Prime Minister confirmed that there is space for constructive dialogue with foreign companies including the Slovak ones, and that he is open to any discussions concerning this issue.
Foreign affairs ministries of the Slovak Republic and Montenegro plan to establish closer cooperation in promoting interests within economic diplomacy. State Secretary R. Chovanec discussed this with the Director General for Economic and Cultural Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Dejan Vuković. Both of them see the importance of identifying sectors, in which greater mutual engagement of business entities could contribute to wider partnerships.
“Montenegro sees the potential for improving conditions for potential investors from abroad especially after finalizing the construction of transport infrastructure that is currently a weak point of their economy. Slovak companies could also participate in this regard,” wrapped up Chovanec, who also stated that the ministries want to develop the discussion further while also continuing with sessions of the Mixed Commission for Economic Cooperation under the ministries of economy.
In Podgorica the State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry also met with President of the Chamber of Economy of Montenegro Nina Drakić, with whom he also spoke about concrete possibilities for Slovak businessmen to establish themselves on the local market.
“We agreed that the existing level of trade-and-economic cooperation does not correspond to the high level of political relations. Therefore we consider it important to find a mechanism that would help us create optimal conditions for investors from the Slovak Republic, especially in the energy and defense industries. These would boost mutual turnover,” added Chovanec.
