Valér Franko will become the new Slovak Ambassador to the Republic of Lebanon. His remit will also include the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Iraq and the Syrian Arab Republic.
He leaves his position as director of the Near and Middle East and Africa Department at the Slovak Foreign Ministry, having previously represented Slovakia on several postings to Iraq, Iran, the United Arab Emirates. He also served as ambassador to Egypt.
Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár emphasised that one of the main objectives of Slovak foreign policy in the Middle East region is to support preventive diplomacy aimed at reducing tensions and resolving disputes peacefully.
Given the security situation, Slovakia is not considering reopening its embassy in Damascus, Syria, which was closed in 2015. According to Ambassador Valér Franko, if, in the near future, the security situation improves and relations with the international community normalise, the reconstruction of Syria's infrastructure and economy will become a real topic of discussion.
Exports to Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Syria, already worth several tens of millions of euro, also represent an opportunity for Slovak companies. As the new Ambassador added, the intention to create a Slovak-Lebanese chamber of commerce could support these activities.Updated 12.02.2025
