| President to visit Italy, open honorary consulate in Bari
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini will travel to the Italian Republic on Thursday afternoon for a working visit. In Bari, he will hold talks with representatives of the city and region of Apulia, open a new Honorary Consulate of the Slovak Republic and support the development of relations between Slovak and Italian partners. TASR was informed about this by the Communications Department of the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic (OP). The delegation of the Slovak President will also include representatives of Slovak universities, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the city of Liptovský Mikuláš and Slovak companies.
"A significant point on the agenda will be the signing of memorandums of understanding between Slovak and Italian partners at the Bari City Hall. The documents will concern the development of cooperation in the areas of local government, education, economy and transport," the office said. The intention for cooperation between the cities of Bari and Liptovský Mikuláš builds on the common cultural and spiritual heritage associated with the personality of Saint Nicholas and forms the basis for the preparation of a future memorandum of understanding. The cities also declare their intention to develop future cooperation, especially in the field of organizing joint events, exchanging experiences in receiving visitors, cooperation between schools and implementing joint European projects.
The memoranda between eight Slovak and three Italian universities based in Bari will also create a framework for the development of academic and scientific cooperation, including exchange stays, joint research projects and the future awarding of double degrees. In addition, representatives of the universities will also hold direct negotiations at the University of Bari. The aim is to discuss the possibilities of specific inter-university and academic cooperation in the educational and scientific fields at several levels.
“The President of the Slovak Republic will also be awarded the Silver Seal of the Aldo Mora University in Bari as a sign of recognition and confirmation of developing academic cooperation at the European level,” adds KP.
The agreement between the SARIO agency and Confindustria Puglia creates space for deepening bilateral economic cooperation, supporting business contacts and investments. The memoranda between the airports of Bari, Bratislava and Košice are focused on mutual strategic cooperation with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of transport connectivity, tourism and economic cooperation.
Pellegrini will also participate in the opening ceremony of the Honorary Consulate of the Slovak Republic in Bari. The Honorary Consul of Slovakia for the Apulia region has been Salvatore Chionno since 2024. "The new consulate will serve as a diplomatic, economic and cultural bridge between Slovakia and one of the most dynamically developing regions of southern Italy. At the same time, it will provide support to Slovak citizens and create space for the development of new partnerships in the areas of innovation, business, education and tourism," the presidential office adds.
